The Tom and Jerry Tale...

Image
Do you recognise this Cartoon episode??? One of my favorite cartoon programs which I have relished since I was a small child is the evergreen slapstick comedy series – “ Tom and Jerry.”   The never-ending cat-mouse game would keep me glued to the television set with both Tom and Jerry trying to outsmart each other with their instantaneous wit and intelligence. As I grew older and started understanding the complexities of the society around me in greater detail, I noticed something really disturbing in my most favorite program. I found in certain episodes, hints of ethnic and racial prejudice that I had learned were commonplace in American society in the 1940's when the cartoon series was first launched. I felt racial stereotyping in quite a few episodes set in homes and gardens in American suburbs, with the owner as a white woman and the maid, black. It was never the other way round. Although I felt bad that such ideas could permeate through the basic fabric of my mos

Diversity in Living Organisms

Hello again Homo sapiens!!! One of the chapters I learned in class 10 during my senior secondary school years was ‘Diversity in Living Organisms .’ It talked about the classification of the large number of flora and fauna all around us so that they become easier to study and understand.   We studied about primitive structures, new structures, general patterns shown by some organisms and similarities shown by them and how the greater the number of similarities shown by a group of organisms, the lower such organisms would be placed in the overall hierarchy, with the basic life forms starting on the top.  I particularly found the topic interesting because of two reasons: 1 1)       I got to learn fantastic names like Synchiropus Splendidus…Scoliodon…Hippocampus…       Caulophyryne Jordani… and many more and I felt really happy speaking them out. It made me look  sophisticated and of the kind of erudite, even th

The Nerd...A Hidden Stereotype

void main() { cout<<”Hello everyone”; } Wait! Wait!!! Do not run away after seeing the first few lines 😊 That’s just a C++ program that says Hello! I am Siddhanta Panda. I am a freshman studying Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and am from New Delhi, India. I love commanding computers all around me to do fancy things and am simply in love with aircrafts. I enjoy flying them on the Flight Simulator and have been doing this ever since I was a child. I love Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as well. I feel they are my foundations. Without them there would have been nothing around us. Math is used in Physics, and Chem stems out of Physics!!! I know what might be coming to most of your minds after reading all of this. What a nerdy guy he is!!! That is true! The words “Nerd”, “Geek”, and “Dork” have been an inseparable part of my life. In my school, I would always get excited when I saw my teacher do something really fantastic on
